Island City began in 1872 as a business center dedicated to the production of flour, that tradition has carried on with Wall Mart building in Island City and attracting many business's that serve Union County.  Its name originally came about due to it being located on an island between the Grande Ronde River and a nearby slough.

Island City is the home of the La Grande Country Club, golf, tennis and club house.
